Early native Rohlfsen studies in South Africa
Gretchen Rohlfsen, of Early and a junior at Luther College in Decorah, studied in South Africa during the January term of the 2000-2001 academic year.
Rohlfsen participated in South African Literature and Culture. The course gave students the opportunity to examine the challenges South Africa faces as it continues to make the transition from apartheid to democracy. Students met South African writers, community activists, teachers and others who are in the forefront of democratic change. Homestays also provided students with a more intimate look into the lives of South African families. Luther College English professor Martin Klammer led the group of 15 students.
Rohlfsen is the daughter of Bob and Gloria Rohlfsen of Early and is pursuing a major in elementary education. She is a 1998 graduate of Schaller-Crestland Community School.
