The Storm Lake Middle School sixth grade students completed their D.A.R.E. culmination on March 8.
Seven members of the program received awards for their D.A.R.E. essays and include Dallas Eddie, Heather Kessler, Amanda Olerich, Kata Harvey and Elizabeth Hixon. The following essay by Katie Overturf is an example from the list of winners.

I promise to say no to drugs. I will keep my promise to my friends, family, teachers and other loved ones. If my parents found out I was on drugs, they would be horrified. They know that I am not the type of person to be on drugs. I know that my friends would probably freak out and not want to hang around me anymore. All the people who care about me would be crushed. I would be crushed, too. Since I hear from just about everyone that drugs can kill me, I have just decided to be drug free forever!
Since I had the opportunity to experience the D.A.R.E. program, I got to learn some of the ways to say no, and that you can say no to your friends without ruining your friendship completely. I also learned how drugs are seen in an adolescent's point of view. Here are a few examples of these things I've learned.
