Census figures show 15% growth for city; Hispanic population in BV County is 16 times higher than '90.
Storm Lake's population has officially passed the 10,000 mark for the first time, according to U.S. Census data received Monday by state officials. The official Census 2000 population count for Storm Lake is 10,076 - a 15 percent increase over the 1990 Census figure of 8,769.
Local census committee members had been confident that Storm Lake's actual population is well above 10,000.
Reaching that figure promises additional benefits for the community, such as increased funding through certain state and federal programs.
"We are pleased that Storm Lake surpassed the 10,000 mark," said John Call, city administrator. He added the city is set to receive an additional $104,000 in road use tax funds due to the population increase.
The success of the Storm Lake count is attributed in part to the work of the 2000 Census Complete Count Committee.
"Through their efforts, the committee raised awareness and provided education on the importance of the census throughout the community," Call said.
Members included John Madsen, Hector Velez, Dale Carver, Jim Petzolt, Jim Gossett, Melanie Miller, Julie Egland, Kate Fitzgerald, Jerry Johnson, Clark Fort, Bill Kruse, Mark Prosser and Patti Moore.
