Panthers drop pair, but show flashes of talent

Thursday, September 1, 2005

The Storm Lake St. Mary's High volleyball team lost a pair of five-game matches here Tuesday night in their 2005 debut.

The Panthers opened with a 3-2 loss against Siouxland Christian.

In that match, Maggie Lange served 94 percent with three aces and five kills. Junior hitter Jessica Lussman recorded six kills, adding 93 percent serving with two aces. Junior Abby Richardson had 10 kills, nine set assists and six ace serves.

In the second match, a 3-2 loss to Sac City, Cassie Weaver led the way with nine kills and Colleen Smith added six aces and five kills.

"Overall, we did not play to our potential," said Panther coach Michelle Rubel. "We served pretty well against Siouxland Christian, but not against Sac City.

"Unfortunately, the missed serves came at crucial times vs. Sac City.

Rubel added that her team looked good at times, but "would just fall apart and drop too many points in a row. Oftentimes, the points dropped were unforced errors.

"Our next playing date is at home Tuesday against WLVA. Between now and then, we will spend a lot of time working on fundamentals and building on the good things that are going on."
