A judge has not decided whether to grant a new trial to Rene Zarate, 17, after his attorneys filed a motion for a new trial last week.
A hearing on the motion for a new trial was held Tuesday at the Buena Vista County Courthouse, but was continued indefinitely.
Zarate, 17, of Storm Lake was found guilty by a Buena Vista County jury last month in the 1999 stabbing death of Jorge Ramos, 47, of Storm Lake.
Zarate was found guilty of first-degree murder, which carries a life sentence without parole. His sentencing is delayed until a ruling is made on the new trail motion.
