The Storm Lake Middle School principal was named the 2001 Iowa Middle Level Principal of the Year this week by School Administrators of Iowa. Bryan also received the award in 1995.
He said it is an honor to be recognized as the middle level principal of the year, but added that he did not expect it.
"I was shocked that I was selected because Storm Lake had two recent awards in other categories last year," he said. "I was also shocked because I won it before."
Juli Kwikkel, East and West principal, was named the elementary principal of the year last year and Larry Parman, assistant superintendent, was named the central administrator of the year. Bryan said the fact that since three administrators in two years have received such honors shows that the Storm Lake schools are doing something right.
Bryan stressed that his award is something that should be shared by the entire staff at the Storm Lake Middle School.
"The things I believe in obviously are things the staff supports, otherwise I wouldn't have received this," he said. "The award is a compliment to the staff."
He said there is a definite team attitude working at the middle school, with veteran teachers supporting younger staffers. "Our teachers are not out there alone," he said.
Bryan has spent his education career working with middle school students. Before arriving in Storm Lake he was principal of Tilford Middle School in Vinton for 13 years. Prior to that he was an assistant principal and industrial technology teacher at Charles City.
