Alta fifth grader Cody Hunter has wrestled his way into the USA Wrestling National Tournament in Topeka, Kansas.
The eleven-year-old has been wrestling since he was in kindergarten and earned his berth at the national championships with victories at the district and state levels this season. Prior to the district and state competitions, Cody wrestled in youth tournaments every Saturday during the wrestling season.
"Ive taken Cody to tournaments every weekend since he was in kingergarten," said Cody's mom, Patty Shannon. "I've also always been his coach on the mat."
Cody is a member of Alta's youth wrestling club, better known as the Wolf Pack, and is excited to continue his season at the Topeka Expocentre.
"He's very excited and nervous," said Patty. "It's neat for him to realize that he can do this."
Cody will compete against other youth wrestlers from California, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas and Wisconsin. He will wrestle as one of four members on the Iowa Team and is the lone small-town boy of the bunch.
"The other boys come from bigger places like Sioux City," Patty said. "It's really neat that Cody was able to make it."
Cody will compete in the 60 pound weight class in the 5th and 6th grade junior division.
"Cody is always the lightest in his class, but he does real well," Patty said.
