Defending state champions hit Trojans with 72-45 rout in first round of girls tourney.
DES MOINES - Another game, another dominating performance for Preston.
Beth Marvin scored 22 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked four shots, and Preston extended the state's longest winning streak with a 72-45 victory over Odebolt-Arthur on Monday in the first round of the Class 1A girls state basketball tournament.
Her scoring and rebounding numbers were closely linked. Marvin, who has signed to play for Drake next season, scored points on putbacks after teammates missed free throws.
Linissa Bowman also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the defending state champions, who won their 55th consecutive game. Ashley Helmle added another 10 points for the Trojans, whose average victory margin is 45.
Jill Pudenz scored 12 points to lead Odebolt-Arthur, making its first state appearance since 1992. Sarah Pudenz added 10 points for the Trojans, who finished 18-5 overall.
Preston's defense forced 26 turnovers - 15 in the first half - and held Odebolt-Arthur to one field goal in the game's final 10 minutes.
Amy Young had eight of Preston's 23 steals and also led the Trojans with six assists. Young now has 589 career steals and needs four to break the state record.
