City honors two officers

Erickson, Kavan share SLPD honors for reaching out for youth, diversity.

Pom Kavan and Pete Erickson were honored as Storm Lake Police employees of the year yesterday by the Storm Lake Police Department and the city council.

Pom Kavan, community service officer with over six years on the force, was given the Police Civilian Employee of the Year Award. Officer Pete Erickson received the Police Officer of the Year Award.

Erickson is a 22-year veteran of the SLPD. He heads the Officer Friendly program and the D.A.R.E. program. He is also the department's field training officer.

Erickson has also received the 20-year meritorious service award and has received the Law Enforcement Purple Heart for being injured in the line of duty.

Public Safety Director Mark Prosser said Erickson's name is most associated with youth programs in the city.

"You mention his name and think of children - he's been involved in youth programs for years," Prosser said. "He's been teaching kids the difference between right and wrong and about the law enforcement profession."
