City prepared to offer Call $40,000

Monday, August 15, 2005

The Storm Lake City Council Monday is scheduled to act on accepting the resignation of City Administrator John Call, and will take up the matter of his severance compensation.

According to a termination of employment agreement, Call was told by Mayor Jon Kruse that his management style "is not a good fit for the City of Storm Lake." Call agreed to resign as city administrator effective Aug. 15, contingent upon the city paying him severance compensation as if he had been involuntarily terminated.

Last Nov. 1, the Council unanimously agreed to renew Call's contract with a 3.7 pay increase plus an severance package expansion from four to six months.

If Call finds work within the next six months, the Council will decide whether remaining compensation would be reduced or eliminated.

According to the staff summary on the matter, "His (Call's) agreement does not provide for severance pay in the event of his resignation, but everyone recognizes that the circumstances of his resignation represent an accommodation to the City and justify honoring his severance package."

The severance package would total approximately $40,000, not including any unused vacation or sick leave. Call was placed on paid administrative leave until Aug. 15.

In other business Monday, the council will act on appointing City Clerk Patti Moore as acting city administrator. Moore has served as acting city administrator following the last two city administrators' resignations.
