The American Diabetes Association has selected Buena Vista County Hospital's diabetes program as a recognized program.
Candy Nees, director of nursing, said that distinction means Medicare will now cover patients for diabetes services they receive at BVCH, which was not the case in the past.
"Medicare only reimburses recognized programs," Nees said. "We're the only rural hospital with this recognition."
Administrator Jim Sinek said this is another example of BVCH's goal of becoming a regional facility.

* Plans for a geriatric psych program at BVCH will be put on hold until next year due to Medicare deadlines.
In order for the facility to qualify for Medicare this year, Sinek said the facility would have to be constructed and opened by June 1, 2001, in order to have a patient enter the facility and be released before July 1, 2001 - the only day Medicare will certify it.
"It's impossible to do in that time span," Sinek said, adding that BVCH will continue to examine the possibilities for next year. "We just won't meet (deadlines) for this fiscal year," he said.
