After enjoying success in its first outing, the Extreme Am is returning to Spencer's East Leach Park. The skatepark will be the site of Extreme Am 2 Saturday, Aug. 20 and Sunday, Aug. 21.
The addition of a rollerblading division, to go along with the skateboard competition prompted the addition of a second day to northwest Iowa's own extreme sports festival.
The preliminary skate-boarding and rollerblading competition will take place on Saturday. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with opening ceremonies scheduled to get underway at 10:30 a.m. Competition should begin at 10:45 a.m. and continue through the day with elementary, junior high, high school and adult divisions each getting two runs in both the skateboarding and rollerblading contests. Top vote getters, as determined by the judges, will advance to the semi-finals and final round set to begin at noon Sunday.
Also included in the Saturday competition, the Big Air competition and the Best Trick competition will take place in between the runs.
Following the competition Saturday, around 5 p.m., New Life Worship Center will be hosting a barbecue for the public in the park, and a pair of Christian skate bands are scheduled to play the band shell, from 6-9 p.m.
Both the barbecue and concert are free to the public. A freewill offering will be taken, with all proceeds going towards a mission trip to Mexico at Christmas this year to feed the poor.
Helmets will be mandatory to compete in this year's competition.
Only the top 40 competitors, in each category (skateboard and rollerblade), will be allowed to compete. Registration forms will be available Tuesday at the Daily Reporter, Hot 100, and Bikes Boards and Blades. There is no fee to register.
