Lots of new events for BV County Fair

Let the fun begin! The 119th Buena Vista County Fair will get underway July 21. The fair board, extension personnel and 4-H'ers have planned an exciting four days with events for all ages.

A kick-off for the fair will be held Wednesday, July 20 with the annual parade, sponsored by the Alta Chamber of Commerce and the Buena Vista County Fair Board, to be held at 5:30 p.m. in Alta. Anyone may participate and there is no need to pre-register. Line up will take place at Summit Church, 1000 S. Main, at 4:30 p.m.

According to Mary Weiland, BV Co. Fair Board secretary/treasurer, there are many new events to check out this year. "We're hoping our fair will be a big success. We've got a good carnival again and many new events such as the human cannonball, a pick-up pull and a BBQ cooking contest. Things are looking real positive and we hope people will come out and enjoy the fair."

Here is a rundown on daily events.

Thursday, July 21 / Kids Day!

Commercial buildings will be open from 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

Nightly drawings - must be present to win

7-9 a.m. - Floriculture registration

8 a.m. - 4-H and FFA Sheep and goat show and showmanship at the 4-H show ring

9:30 a.m. - Floriculture judging

10 a.m. - 4-H dog show at the 4-H show ring

1 p.m. - Carnival opens

1 p.m. - 4-H rabbit show at the 4-H show ring

1 p.m. - Bad Boy Truck Show with judging at 2 p.m.

2:30 p.m. - 4-H horse show, all classes, outdoor arena

4-7 p.m. - Kid's Day. Special rates on carnival rides.

7:30 p.m. - Stock car races

Friday, July 22 / Ladies Day

Commercial buildings will be open from 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

4:30 p.m. - Small animal show

5:30 p.m. - Little Miss pageant and Nick's Entertainment

7:30 p.m. - The Steve Hall and Shot Gun Red show

Ladies Day program

9-9:30 a.m. - Free coffee provided by Abner Bell's and cookies donated by Ladies Auxiliary Post #6172 in Alta.

9:30-10:15 a.m. - "4-H Day at the Legislature" presentation by 4-H'ers Sara Baxter, Hannah Fordyce and Kathleen Arnts; also a presentation on "What's going on at 4-H Camp."

10:15-10:45 a.m. - Sandy Morris of Hy-Vee Floral Department

10:45-11:15 a.m. - Presentation on Genesis Quality Life Center.

11:15 a.m.-noon - Presentation on "Arthritis: Stop, Prevent or Reverse It" by Paul Hill, Alta Chiropractic Clinic

Noon-12:45 p.m. - Break for dinner

12:45 p.m. - BV Pork Queen and Little Miss Pigtails

1-1:30 p.m. - Pat Patton of the Quilt Shoppe

1:30-2 p.m. - Presentation on the BVRMC Auxiliary by Jeanne Iordanou, president

2-2:15 p.m. - Presentation "Sew for Love: by Wanda Donahoo

2:15 p.m. - 4-H Clothing events fashion show.

There will be fun and prizes all day long.

Saturday, July 23

11:30 a.m. - 4-H and FFA dairy show

Noon - Jr. feeders and background beef

12:30 p.m. - Bike race sponsored by Coke

1 p.m. - Carnival opens

2 p.m. - Watermelon feed by Heritage Bank

2 p.m. - Overall showmanship

2:30 p.m. - Communication events (educational presentations and working exhibits)

4 p.m. - antique tractors return for games in front of Grandstand

5 p.m. - Free supper (while supplies last)

5:30 p.m. - 4-H pie making contest6:30-7:30 p.m. - Sara Sennert and the Singing Farmer musical show

7:30 p.m. - Buena Vista County Fair Queen will be crowned followed by "Let's Make a Deal"

Sunday, July 24

5 p.m. - 4-H Share the Fun in the 4-H auditorium

8 p.m.-midnight - County Youth Council dance
