An 18-year-old South Dakota teenager drowned in a northwest Iowa gravel pit, a popular swimming area for youth, authorities said.
Bruce Frazier, 18, of Sioux Falls, S.D., and a friend were swimming across the Ocheyedan gravel pit Saturday night when Frazier began to call for help. He was about 150 feet from shore when he sank into the water, the Osceola County Sheriff's department said in a statement.
Divers from Okoboji Fire and Rescue found Frazier in about 15 feet of water.
He was pronounced dead at Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.
Several drowning tragedies have colored the early summer season around Iowa.
