Two-time defending state champion N-F opens with blowout win.
NEWELL - Corey Carlton poured in 23 points, including five 3-pointers, as two-time defending state champion Newell-Fonda opened Class 1A district tournament play with an 80-45 victory over Lawton-Bronson Wednesday.
Newell-Fonda, now 17-2, will play River Valley in a district semifinal game on Monday night in Moville.
Newell-Fonda used two big spurts to blow the game open. The Mustangs led 12-10 when they scored 16 unanswered points to go ahead 28-10 in the first half. It was 38-24 at the break.
The Mustangs then outscored the Eagles 22-3 in the third period to go up 60-27 entering the fourth period.
Brandon Kies scored 14 points for Newell-Fonda, which was 32 of 66 from the field for 48 percent.
Wade Brower added 10 points. Eric Johnson, Jason Ripke and Jon Grote all had six points apiece.
"I was very pleased how we came out in the second half," Newell-Fonda coach Paul Loos said. "We did some nice things. I was very happy on how we moved the ball around to get the open shot. We'll have to continue to do the little things that make the difference."
