Alta's Meals on Wheels program has been serving the community since 1971 and with a strong backing has continued to be one of the community's strongest programs.
The purpose of the program has always been to assist neighbors in need. Meals on Wheels meets the needs of the elderly or those recovering from a hospital stay by preparing and delivering a home-cooked meal to them. Some of the participants are long term, while others need the service for only a few days.
In the year 2000, the Meals on Wheels program delivered 3,718 meals and regardless of the winter weather this year, not one meal has been missed.
"I've gotten over here every day," Meals on Wheels provider Avonne Frederickson said. "I always make sure to get here."
Frederickson, who used to run her own cafe, has taken on the role of providing the meals for the program. She has served as the program's provider for the past five years.
"I really enjoy it and it gives me something to get up for in the morning," Frederickson said. "I believe this is really a mission of continued importance. It's important for everyone to know that this is available to them."
