Storm Lake High School music students take part in state large group festival

Tuesday, May 17, 2005

On Friday, May 6, the Storm Lake High School Music Department traveled to LeMars High School for the annual State Large Group Festival. This was one of the numerous sites that host the culminating activity of high school music departments for their concert bands, orchestras, and choirs. This Iowa High School Music Association contest is adjudicated by three judges that rate the performance on a scale of Division I to a Division V, with a Division I being a superior performance. The following ensembles from Storm Lake High School performed that evening and the results are:

String Orchestra Division II, Concert Band Division I, Mixed Chorus 1 (JV) Division I, Mixed Chorus 2(Varsity) Division I, Treble (women) Chorus Division I, and Bass(men) Chorus Division I.

The Orchestra has had a wonderful year and has advanced into a higher level of musical performance. The orchestra performed very well on Friday evening but missed a Division I rating by one point. This appraisal at that given place and time will not diminish the quality of musicianship that was attained this school year.

The Concert Band had a very good year. Their performance on Friday evening was very musical with a high level of facility and technical skills apparent. The band's strengths carried them to a Division I rating.

The Vocal Department has again grown in quality this year. All four ensembles received Division I's. The groups that participated were the Bass Chorus, Treble Chorus, Junior Varsity Chorus, and the Varsity Chorus. A special thank you to Judy Fells of Schaller, for her devotion to the Vocal Department and the professional quality of piano accompaniment she brings to the choirs. This factor makes high quality performances by the ensemble more attainable.

As musical performers, all of the student musicians did very well on Friday evening, and should be congratulated for their efforts. As representatives of Storm Lake High School in the audience as well as in the ensembles, they also were very mature and maintained our reputation and image as a total class act. The orchestra is directed by Carol Peterson and Lee Thorson, choirs by Jeff Tollefson, and the brand is directed by Frank Hoskins.
