Tornado boys golfers edged by E-Hawks at Lakes meet

OKOBOJI - Emmetsburg placed three players in the top five here Monday to win the Lakes Conference boys golf meet, edging Storm Lake by three strokes, 308-311.

Estherville was also in the mix all day, taking third and just one stroke behind the Tornadoes.

The Tornadoes were led by Aaron Clausen, who shot a 37 on the front nine and a 37 on the back to finish with a 74. He was the runner up to meet medalist Andy Soper of Estherville-LC, who shot a 73.

Two other Storm Lake players shot in the 70s, as Jay Severson fired a 40-38 for a 78 and Kyle Nielsen shot a 39-40 - 79.

Senior Adam Ponsor shot a 44-44 for an 88, while senior Ben Thompson carded a 40-40 - 80 and Kyle Nitchols fired a 43-43 - 86.

Emmetsburg was led by a third place finish from Tom Thompson (75), a fourth from Michael Peterson (76) and a tie for fourth by Doug Thompson 76.

Making All-Conference for the Tornadoes were Clausen and Jay Severson. The other all-conference players were Corey Lemke of Sheldon (77), Eric Reese of Spirit Lake (77), and Trevor Enerson of Estherville (78).

On Tuesday, the Tornadoes won a nine-hole dual meet with Pocahontas at the SL Municipal course, 151-159.

Clausen and Severson led the way with 37's, while Nielsen fired a 38, Ponsor a 39, Nitchols a 39 and Thompson a 43.

In the junior varsity match, Zach Peterson's 36 led the Tornadoes to a 160-stroke performance, beating Pocahontas by 30 strokes.

Sam Jennett added a 39, Ryan Brandt a 41 and Matt Hoskins a 44. Ross Frederickson and Travis Wendt each fired 45's.

The SLHS C team finished third with 192 strokes, beating Poky by 37 strokes.

Ben Smith led the way for Storm Lake with a 44 while Ben Smith added a 44 and Ben Tjaden fired a 40. Luke VanderWoude, Zach Miller and Ryan Drey each carded 50's and Will Hansen a 58.
