Boys capture 6th straight Lakes crown
STORM LAKE - The Storm Lake boys track and field team qualified 14 individuals for the All-Lakes Conference team here Monday in the conference meet, also winning it sixth straight Lakes team competition.
The Tornadoes dominated with strong individual performances and depth, taking first with 111.50 points. LeMars was a distant second with 72.50 points. Cherokee was third with 67 points
"Our kids had a great night on the track," said SLHS coach Jeff Brennan, who was voted the 2005 Lakes Conference Coach of the Year.
"We missed some points early in the meet, but our team found a way to pick each other up," he added. "This is a pretty special group of young men. We think of each other as one big family."
Brennan added that his team had 11 personal or season's best times and distances in individual and relay events.
The Tornadoes were led once again by junior Logan Masters, who took first place in the 110 high hurdles in 15.14 seconds and first in the 400 low hurdles in 56.20 seconds.
Masters also ran on the winning 4x400 relay. That team of Masters, Lance Eddie, Tyson Brandt and junior Derrick Randall was first in 3 minutes, 32.34 seconds.
The Tornadoes' 4x100 team of Lamthong Sounnarath, Alex Spielman, Brandt and Randall added a first place with a season's best time of 44.90 seconds.
Randall added a second place in the 200 meter dash with a personal best time of 22.57 seconds. Also in that event, Brady Randall ran a personal best time of 23.9 seconds.
In the 1600 meters, junior Kevin Wulfekuhler took second with a personal best time of 4:47.80.
Sophomore Alex Spielman was all-conference in two individual events, taking second in the 110 high hurdles (15.51 seconds) and the 400 low hurdles (58.07 seconds). Both times were personal bests.
Also on the track, Tyson Brandt took third in the 400 dash in a personal best time of 52.90 seconds.
In the field events, Spielman added a third place in the long jump with a personal best jump of 20 feet, 2.25 inches. Masters was third in the high jump (5-10), while teammate Chom Thammavongsa tied for sixth in that event with a leap of 5-6. Tony Raveling took fifth in the shot put with a toss of 46-10.25.
Also individually, Wulfekuhler was fourth in the 800 meters in 2:07.19, with Derrick Randall adding a fifth place in the 100 dash (11.60 seconds). Matt Adams took fifth in the 400 meters with a personal best time of 53.78 seconds. Sounnarath added a sixth in the 100 dash in 11.62 seconds.
Three other relay teams placed for the Storm Lake boys. The 4x200 team of Eddie, Alex Kwikkel, Daniel Higgins and Chom Thammavongsa took fourth with a season's best time of 1:34.80.
The medley relay team of Eddie, Kwikkel, Mitch McCabe and Adam Sorbe took fourth in a season's best time of 3:48.57 while the 4x800 team of Adam Sorbe, Matt Speers, Adams and A.J. Croker took fifth with a time of 9:01.40.
