Wednesday, February 21, 2001

SCHALLER - Niki Maske scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers during a decisive spurt in the third period to power Newell-Fonda to a 65-44 victory over Schaller-Crestland in a Class 1A district final game Saturday night at Schaller.

Newell-Fonda, now 16-6 overall, will play Rockwell City-Lytton tonight at 7 p.m. in Rockwell City.

The game was tied at 10-10 after a sluggish first quarter for both teams. The Mustangs trailed 18-17 when Ashley Loos made a 3-pointer to start a 10-2 run to close the first half. The Mustangs led 27-20 at the break.

The third quarter was all Newell-Fonda. Becka Kosky sank a 3-pointer to make it a 30-20 game before Maske sank back-to-back 3-pointers to push the lead to 36-22 with 4 1/2 minutes left in the period.

Schaller-Crestland never recovered from that as the Mustangs would eventually build their lead to 46-28 by the end of the third quarter.

Newell-Fonda's lead widened to 52-34 with 5 minutes remaining and then 57-37 with 3 minutes to play.

The telling tale in the game was free-throw shooting. The Mustangs were 27 of 44 from the line compared to 9 of 13 for the Wildcats.

Kosky scored 10 points and Ashley Bellinghausen and Sara Larsen eight apiece for the Mustangs.

Angie Willer led the Wildcats with 16 points. Jessi Bellcock had 12 and Jenna Malcom 10. The Wildcats finished their season 14-7 overall.
