Harold D. Bloom

November 16, 1914 - April 13, 2005

Funeral services for Harold Bloom were 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 18 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City with Pastor Galvin Ellis officiating. Burial was in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City.

Harold D. Bloom, age 90, of Albert City died, Wednesday, April 13 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Harold David Bloom was born on November 16, 1914 in Bancroft, Neb., to David and Hilda (Carlson) Bloom. He lived with his family in the Pender and Concord, Neb., areas, attending school through the eighth grade in rural Concord. He was baptized as an infant in the Pender, Neb., Covenant Church and confirmed in the Concord, Neb., Free Church.

During the 1930's, Harold was back and forth between his Nebraska home and Albert City. At times, he helped Albert City farmers with corn harvest. Other years, he worked the Bloom family farm in Nebraska.

His family moved to Albert City in 1938. He arrived in Albert City shortly thereafter and met and married Lorraine Loving on March 3, 1941 in her parent's home on their farm near Albert City. They were blessed with three daughters: Alice, Ione and Elaine. They farmed in the Albert City area and moved to the current farm with their family in the fall of 1959.

Traveling was always part of Harold and Lorraine's life. Together, they regularly visited their three daughters whether they were in Michigan, Illinois, California, Maryland or Australia. They also often attended extended family's events on both sides. Family was very import to Harold.

Harold was active in the community. He was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, where he served in various capacities. For many years, he served in various positions on the board of the Cooperative Elevator. He was also a member of the board for Pleasant View Home and a member of the Lion's Club.

In addition, Harold was sexton of Fairfield Township Cemetery until the time of his death. He would enlist the help of his grandsons and grand nephews for mowing and trimming the cemetery grounds in the summer. When time allowed, Harold enjoyed playing a round or two of golf.

Survivors include his wife Lorraine of Albert City; daughters: Alice (Keith) Johnson of Marquette, Mich., Ione (Brian) Linke of Rockville, Md. and Elaine (Jim) Ahlberg of Rochelle, Ill.; seven grandchildren: Chris (Becky) Johnson, Andy Johnson, Michael (Kelli) Linke, Alex Linke, Alarich Linke, Matt Ahlberg and Erik Ahlberg; three great grandchildren: Hannah Johnson, Shelby Johnson and Holden Linke; brothers Herbert Bloom of California and Clarence Bloom of Minnesota; sisters Florence Carlson of Minnesota and Vivian Sundblad of Albert City; and other extended family and friends.

Preceding Harold in death are his parents, David and Hilda Bloom.

Evelyn Grau

July 27, 1920 - April 14, 2005

Memorial services for Evelyn Grau were Monday, April 18, 10:30 am, at the United Methodist Church in Newell with Rev. David Schumann officiating. Inurnment was at the Newell Cemetery under the direction of the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home.

Evelyn M. Grau, age 84, of Newell, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, April 14, with her daughter by her side.

Evelyn Marie Waskom was born July 27, 1920, on the family farm in Sac County, the daughter of Jay and Mabel (Hines) Waskom.

Evelyn attended country school and graduated from Nemaha High School. On January 24, 1948, Evelyn was united in marriage to Harald H. Grau in Wickenburg, Ariz. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Joann.

Evelyn was a partner and worked alongside her husband as the bookkeeper in their business, Grau Motors. She enjoyed spending time with her family and coffee group, gardening, watching sports, and car racing. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Newell.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Joann Grau and John Beckner of Grand Junction, Colo.; three sisters: Mildred Rogers of Newell, Lucile Schnirring of Sac City, and Crystal and husband Don Larimer of St. Louis, Mo.; four sisters-in-law: Ruth Bennett of Sun City, Ariz., Dorothy and husband Richard Stilling of Northridge, Calfi., Ardyth Barber of Okoboji, and Kay Grau of Storm Lake; and many nieces; nephews; extended family members; and friends.

Preceding Evelyn in death were her parents; husband Harald, on March 6, 2004; brothers-in-law: Dean Rogers, Glen Schnirring, H. G. "Ben" Bennett, Charles Weiland, Jerry Barber, Holger Grau, and Theodore Grau; sister-in-law Leona Grau; and her nieces; Kristi Emmick, Cheryl Grau, and Cathy Larimer.
