Buena Vista University softball pitchers Sarah Dirkx and Brandi Sykora both pitched complete game gems here Sunday afternoon, leading BVU to a sweep of the University of Dubuque.
Dirkx, a junior from Council Bluffs, tossed a four-hit shutout in game one, a 6-0 win. Sykora followed that up by allowing just one run on five hits in a tight, 2-1 BVU win in game two.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Beavers improved to 4-6 in Iowa Conference play and to 13-15 overall.
In game one, Dirkx struck out seven and walked three and her teammates gave her ample offense in the form of eight hits, one walk and one Dubuque error.
The Beavers struck early in the opener, scoring three runs in the first inning.
In that frame, the Beavers scored their first run on two Dubuque errors, and two others scored on a two-run triple by rightfielder Amy Kaimes.
While Dirkx was shutting down Dubuque's offense, BVU added three more runs in the top of the sixth.
In that inning, pinch hitter Jennifer Schnoes hit at RBI-single and later, Kaimes scored on an error. BVU got the third run on a run-scoring single by freshman Amanda Armstrong.
Offensively for BVU, Armstrong went 2 for 4 with an RBI, while catcher Brooke Bousum went 3 for 4.
Game two was a pitcher's duel between Sykora and Dubuque's Amber Thissen.
Both teams went scoreless through the first six innings, with BVU scoring twice in the top of the seventh.
Dubuque was able to rally for a run in the bottom of the seventh but fell one run short.
Dubuque's run was unearned. Sykora allowed five hits and two walks while striking out seven. Thissen also went the distance, allowing just four BVU hits while walking four and striking out one.
In the top of the seventh, Bousum led off the rally with a one-out double. After Kaimes struck out, Sykora drew a walk to put runners on first and second with two outs.
Schnoes then hit another run-scoring single, with Sykora advancing to third. The freshman pitcher later scored on an error.
In the Dubuque seventh, Sykora got the first out on a groundout, but the next two hitters reached on an infield error and a walk.
Sykora coaxed leadoff hitter Jennifer Koslowski to pop up, then Tracy Schultz singled home a run. With runners on second and third, Sykora got Amanda Russell to ground out to second baseman Katie Onken for the game's final out.
Bousum had two hits for BVU, giving her five hits in the two games. Schnoes and Ashley McCool each added on hit.
The BVU softball team plays at Central College Wednesday then play host to Cornell College Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
