Wiitmaack, McKibben set new meet marks at Cherokee

Rebel boys lap the 1A field with some stellar performances

Sioux Central seniors Cody Wiitmaack and Matt McKibben continued their outstanding track and field seasons here Saturday, leading the Rebels to a first place in the Class 1A portion of the Tomahawk Relays.

Wiitmaack set a school and meet record in winning the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 11.5 inches. McKibben followed suit, setting meet and school marks in winning the 110 high hurdles in 14.57 seconds.

Sioux Central won in Class 1A, finishing with 89 points. South O'Brien was a close second with 83 points with Cherokee third with 82. Alta was fourth with 75 points.

McKibben added a second in the high jump with a leap of six feet, while Wiitmaack added second places in the 110 hurdles (15.45 seconds) and the 400 hurdles (458.73 seconds).

Wiitmaack and McKibben were also on Sioux Central's winning 4x200 relay. That pair, along with A.J. Tiefenthaler and Justin Shideler, won with a new meet record time of 1 minute, 34.65 seconds.

McKibben ran the third leg in the winning medley relay, along with Shideler, Tiefenthaler and Eric Patten (3:47.77).

The Rebels' 4x40 relay team of Jesse Steece, Kyle Aronson, Nate Cowell and Patten was fourth in 3:44.90 while the 4x800 team of Steece, Aronson, Nate Lichter and Patten was third in 8:445.87.

Individually, Shideler was third in the 100 dash in 11.71 seconds while Connor Lindquist was fourth in the 3200 meters (11:15.40) and Marshall Wernimont sixth in that event in 11:53.10.

Steece added a fifth place in the 800 meters (2:145.20) and a sixth in the high jump (5-10).

Alta, meanwhile, was led by Quentin Thomas, who finished the day with three personal bests. He won the 400 meter dash in 51.50 seconds and had a personal best in the high jump, placing fifth with a leap of 5-10.

Alta standout Kyle Sauter placed in four events. He was third in the 110 hurdles in 15.89 seconds and third in the 400 hurdles in 1:00.76. He was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 6 inches. Sauter also led off the winning 4x400 relay. That team of Sauter, Brad Payne, Paul Allerdings and Thomas won in 3:35.38.

Individually for the Cyclones, T.J. Aube was third in the discus (121 feet, 5 inches) while Payne was sixth in the high jump (19-11.5).

Brian Botello was fifth in the 100 dash in 11.81 seconds while Brian Sauter was fourth in the 400 hurdles (15.96 seconds) and sixth in the 200 meters (24.28 seconds).

Paul Allerdings was third in the 400 meter dash in 53.10 seconds and Jordan Letzring fifth in the 3200 meters (11:32.54).

Alta's 4x200 relay team of Chris Schmitz, Cody Schmitz, Jake Bibler and Anand Hase was sixth in 1:38.38.
