The Buena Vista University softball team extended its winning streak to five games with wins over North Central College and Hamline University on Thursday. It is the squad's longest winning streak since 2001.
Buena Vista opened the day by avenging one of its losses suffered earlier in the week to North Central. This time the Beavers beat the Cardinals 3-2. Behind 2-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, BVU scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to claim the come-from-behind win.
Brandi Sykora went the distance pitching seven innings while giving up just one earned run. She struck out five batters and did not yield a single walk. Molly Luchtel was two for three with one run batted in. Ashley Partlow drove in the other two Beaver runs.
Buena Vista's comeback magic worked again in its second game against Hamline. Trailing 6-4 in the third inning, the Beavers scored seven runs in the third and five in the fourth to defeat the Pipers 16-7 in a game that was halted after five innings.
Sykora notched the win in relief. Five Buena Vista players had two hits as each starter picked up at least one hit.
Buena Vista is now 6-8 after starting the season 1-8.
