Alta sophomore Dee Hinkeldey and St. Mary's sophomore Abby Richardson got off to quick starts for the upcoming track season here Friday at the BVU Open High School Indoor meet.
Hinkeldey, the defending 1A state champion in the 400 meter dash, won that event handily Friday, taking first in 1 minute, 1.48 seconds. She beat second place Brittany Moore of Harlan by almost one second.
Hinkeldey, who set four new outdoor records last year at Alta High, added a third place in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 3.50 inches.
Richardson started her spring season with a second in the long jump (15-9.5) and a fourth place in the 55 meter dash in 7.74 seconds.
Also for the Panther girls, sophomore Janie Imming tied for fourth in the high jump with a leap of 4-8 and was a member of her team's shuttle hurdle relay team that took fourth in 42.43 seconds.
Megan Snyder added an eighth place for St. Mary's in the 55 meter dash in 7.92 seconds, while sophomore Jessica Lussman was seventh in the 55 meter hurdles in 9.60 seconds.
Alta also had several other strong performances. Sophomore Jahde Hammer took third in the 800 meter run in 2:47.68, while teammate Megan Suhr was fifth in the 55 meter dash (7.84 seconds) and eighth in the long jump with a leap of 14,01.25.
Distance runner Terra Miller was 11th in the shot put with a toss of 30-.8 while Brianna Aube was ninth in the mile run (6:45.07) and fifth in the 800 meters (2:54.00).
The Cyclones' 4x800 relay team of Liza Lichtenberg, Hammer, Katie Connolly and Hinkeldey was sixth in 11:11.06. Also, Lichtenberg and Connolly tied for ninth in the high jump with leaps of 4-6.
Alta coach Pamela Barnes was pleased with her team's performance.
In Friday's BVU open events for boys, the Alta and Sioux Central boys had some strong times and distances.
Alta was led by Brian and Kyle Sauter. Brian tied for third place in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.55 seconds and added a third place in the high jump (5-10). Kyle was third in the long jump (19-8) and eighth in the 55 hurdles in 8.25 seconds. He added an 11th-place in the 400 dash in 57.73 seconds.
Cyclone sprinter Quentin Thomas took third in the 400 meter dash in 53.94 seconds while Brad Payne was sixth in that event in 56.61 seconds.
Alta's Tyler Sliefert was sixth in the open 800 meters in 2:16.34 and 11th in the mile run (5:22.52). Paul Allerdings took ninth in the 800 meters in 2:18.48 while Thomas tied for eighth in the high jump (5-6).
Alta also performed well in two relays. The Cyclones' 4x800 team was second to Harlan in 8:58.00 and fifth in the 4x4009 relay (3:52.31). The Alta sprint medley relay took eighth in 4:10.23.
Sioux Central was led individually by senior Matt McKibben, who took first in the 55 meter hurdles in 7.85 seconds and fifth in the high jump with a leap of 5-8.
Rebel distance runner Nate Lechter took eighth in the mile run in 5:18.01 and 13th in the 800 meters (2:20.24). Marshall Wernimont added a seventh place in the 800 in 2:18.33.
Sioux Central's Andrew Phinney was eighth in the high jump (5-6) and tenth in the 55 meter dash (6.80 seconds).
The Rebels' 4x200 relay team took sixth in 1:40.46.
