A man shot and killed his former mother-in-law before he killed himself in this small southern Iowa town, officials said Monday.
Kevin Paul Vanderlinden, 49, of Osceola, shot Patricia Baker, 62, Sunday night as she and her daughter, who is Vanderlinden's ex-wife, ran to a neighbor's house, Clarke County Sheriff Mark Addison said. His ex-wife, whose name was not released, was not injured, the sheriff said.
The motive is believed to be Vanderlinden's recent divorce, he said.
According to the sheriff, Vanderlinden tried to call his ex-wife several times earlier in the day. At about 6 p.m., he went to bar in Osceola, where he got a ride to Murray.
Before leaving Osceola, he stopped by his house and picked up two guns - a 12-guage shotgun and a high-powered rifled, Addison said.
