Beavers will play for tourney title at Wartburg
The Buena Vista University men's basketball team cruised into the Iowa Conference championship here at Siebens Field House Friday night, beating Luther 74-62 in an IIAC tourney semifinal game.
With the win, the tenth-ranked BVU men improved to 25-2 on the season and advanced to the Iowa Conference championship game.
They'll face off against 11th ranked Wartburg tonight at 7 p.m. in Waverly for the tourney title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament.
Friday night, five BVU players reached double figures as the Beavers led early on and remained in control.
Senior post player Randy Bissen led the way with a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds, while senior guard Eric Wiebers added 15 points and forward Michael Cameron 13.
All five BVU starters reached double figures, as senior forward Jordan Campbell added 12 points and Brandon Kies 11.
BVU built a 36-22 lead after the first 20 minutes and outscored Luther 41-40 in the second half for the final margin.
BVU shot the ball extremely well, hitting 32 of 54 shots for 59.3 percent. They hit 18 of 25 shots from the field in the second half for a blistering 72 percent.
The Beavers held an edge on the boards, outrebounding Luther 40-26.
The Beavers also played some good defense, particularly in the first. In that first 20 minutes, BVU held the Norse to just eight of 23 from the field for 34 percent.
Drew Divine led Luther with 16 points while Brandon Grimm added 12.
BVU split with Wartburg this season, losing to the Knights 72-61 in Waverly in January.
The two teams met a week ago in Storm Lake, with the Beavers claiming an 75-64 win over Wartburg.
