Sophie Erickson Walter

May 5, 1906 - February 22, 2005

Funeral services for Sophie Walter were Friday, February 25 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in rural Albert City, with Pastor David Bernhardt officiating. Burial was in St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City.

Sophie Erickson Walter, age 98, of Albert City died Tuesday, February 22 at Pleasant View Care Center in Albert City.

Sophie was born May 5, 1906 to Wilhelm and Louise (Nordbrook) Ehrich on a farm south of Albert City where she lived with her parents during her early years. She received her education at the country school in rural Albert City. Sophie lived her entire life in Buena Vista County.

Sophie had a lifelong relationship with her church, St. John Lutheran in rural Albert City, where she was baptized, confirmed, married, and now will be buried from St. John's and laid to rest in the church cemetery.

On February 25, 1935, Sophie was united in marriage to Willis Erickson at St. John's by Pastor Carl Wenger. Sophie and Willis welcomed an adopted daughter, Thelma Jane Thomas from Bettensport, Iowa, on August 3, 1940. Thelma was a half-sister to Willis. Willis passed away May 20, 1975.

On March 3, 1984, Sophie married Ralph Walter of Storm Lake at St. John's. Pastor Victor Wenger, son of Pastor Carl Wenger, officiated at the wedding ceremony. Ralph died May 30, 1985.

Sophie was a loving wife and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who took great pride in keeping a warm and comfortable home for her family. She also held a job as a café cook for two years, and was a cook at the school for 10 years. Sophie enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, playing cards, and animals. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Thelma Jane and husband Freddie Degner of Albert City; grandchildren: Cindy Degner O'Neall (Bill), Mike Degner (Mel), Sue Degner Shold (Dan) and Ron Degner (Rhonda); great-grandchildren: Damon O'Neall, Leigh Degner Schultz (Jason), Misti Degner Grant, Mick Degner (Laura), Kelli Shold Vick (Mike), Josh Shold, Rachel Degner, Shayla Degner, Shane Degner; and a host of other family and friends.

Sophie was preceded in death by her father, Wilhelm Ehrich on May 12, 1930; her mother, Louise Nordbrook Ehrich on April 7, 1960; her brother, Walter Ehrich on May 30, 1954; her sister, Ella Henrichs on January 18, 1996; her first husband, Willis; and her second husband, Ralph.

Funeral services for Irvin Jennings Dvergsten, age 100 of Spencer, will be held Saturday, February 26 at 10 a.m. at First Congregational Church in Spencer with Rev. Tom Van Tassell officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. Memorials may be directed to the First Congregational Church in Spencer.

Irvin passed away Tuesday, February 22 at his home in Spencer.

Warner Funeral Home in Spencer is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Nothwehr

August 7, 1915 - January 22, 2005

Funeral services for Arthur Nothwehr were 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 26 at St. John's Church of Christ, rural Peterson with Pastor Robert Grupp and rev. Charles Hall officiating. Interment was at St. John's Cemetery in Peterson.

Arthur John Fred Nothwehr, the son of John and Doretta Sump Nothwehr, was born August 7, 1915, on the Nothwehr farm north of Yorktown. His childhood years were spent in Yorktown where he was baptized, confirmed and educated at the St. Pauls' Lutheran School and Church. Following his schooling, Arthur began farming with his father.

Art was united in marriage to Luella Felten on February 23, 1938, at the St. John's United Church of Christ in rural Peterson. Following their marriage, they started farming in Cherokee County. They farmed until his retirement in 1975, at which time the moved in to Peterson. he was an Archer Oil Dealer for many years. Arthur was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ, in rural Peterson, where he was trustee for Spring Township and was active on all church boards. He was also a member of the Brooke Consolidated School board and was involved in the Lion's Club and Farm Bureau. Arthur was also recognized as a conservation award recipient. He liked to play cards and bowl.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Luella, of Wel Life Assisted Living in Alta; four children, Wanda Donahoo and her husband Robert C. of Peterson, Lowell Nothwehr of Aurelia, and Faye and her husband Dennis Capps of San Marcos, Ca.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola and her husband, Delbert Herzberg of Clarinda; a brother-in-law, Elmer Gerdts of Clarinda and other relatives and friends.
