Team to honor players before tonight's home game with Luther.
Buena Vista will pay tribute tonight to five seniors on the men's basketball team who were unsure of what to expect from Brian Van Haaften when he was named the Beavers' head coach four years ago.
The group was the first recruiting class for Van Haaften and has proven to be the core for continued success in the future. All five players were members of successful high school programs and looked forward to the next step in their careers.
"I came because of (coach's) personality," guard Brett Smith said. "I knew Nolan, Tim, and Nick, and when they were considering Buena Vista, that played a key factor in my decision to select BV as my college choice."
Nick Winters knew where he was going to play college ball after a Buena Vista loss.
"I knew some of the players on the team and I talked with them," he said. "I went to watch them play at Simpson and it was just after BV had secured the conference championship. Simpson beat BV badly in the game and I went and talked to coach Van Haaften after the game. I saw how he handled the loss and I knew at that moment this was the place for me."
Van Haaften made an impression on other members of that first recruiting class.
"I met coach when he was an assistant and he had a vision then of what he wanted to do with this team," guard Nolan Stribe said. "I knew after talking with him, I wanted to be a part of his vision."
