Spencer Police look for clues after church break-in

Monday, January 24, 2005

Spencer police have turned to the public for help after a break-in at First English Lutheran Church.

Authorities think the intruder or intruders forced open a walk-in door on the west side of the building between 3 p.m. on Sunday and 6 a.m. on Monday. Food and an undisclosed amount of money was taken.

Rev. Paul Kaldahl said the break-in left him with an uncomfortable feeling.

"I'll bet we're getting a call every other day of somebody needing assistance," he said. "Some of them were from out of town and passing through. You kind of wonder if one of those you helped recently came back and saw something they thought they liked. Or it could be somebody from town. You just don't know."

Anyone with information about the break-in is asked to call the Spencer Police Department at 712-262-2151.

In the meantime, Kaldahl hopes the burglar or burglars knows that access to First English Lutheran Church doesn't require a forced entry.

"We're here for the type of people who break into our building," Kaldahl said. "That's the type of people we hope to reach someday. We don't have any anger or vindication toward the character. Certainly we'd like to see them get caught, but more than anything we'd like to be able to reach them."
