In a tight game throughout, Laurens Marathon edged the Alta High boys basketball team here Thursday night 57-55.
The Chargers' 6-foot-9 center, Ryan Sones, scored a game-high 22 points while teammates Brandon Bush and Shane Sindergaard each added 11.
"This was another close game that we did not finish," Alta coach Larry McNutt said after the game. "We had chance after chance to win this game a could not get it done.
"This team continues to play hard. We need to make free throws, especially early in the game to help us build bigger leads."
The Cyclones led 18-10 after the first quarter but were outscored 17-11 in the second quarter as the lead was trimmed to 29-27 at the half. The game was tied at 41 after three quarters and the Chargers had a 16-14 advantage in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
"We were tentative on offense, especially early in the game," McNutt said. "If we continue to play hard and have some guys step up in close games, we'll be alright."
Brad Payne led the Cyclones with 18 points while Kylor Cone added 11, Justin DeMan nine and Thomas Hansen seven.
DeMan led Alta in rebounding with seven while Hansen added six. Payne had a strong defensive game with eight steals and he added six assists on offense. Hansen also added five assists.
