By taking an early lead and playing through with a true team effort, the Buena Vista University men defeated the Spartans of the University of Dubuque 106-68 at home Friday in Storm Lake.
Randy Bissen was first to light up the scoreboard for Buena Vista. Balanced scoring in the early minutes by Mike Cameron, Brandon Kies, and Jordan Campbell was a preview of the depth of Buena Vista's shooting for the rest of the game.
The Spartans were never really able to regain the momentum the Beavers managed, and Nolan Grimm's field goal with seconds remaining made it 54-32, Beavers, at the half.
The Beavers' total team effort through the entire game was reflected by the 29 assists for BVU. Kies, Bissen, Campbell, and Cameron all contributed to a torrid offense early in the second half.
It was the remarkable 69 percent from the field with 43 shots made in 62 attempts that gave the Beavers such an advantage. Led by Jordan Campbell, most of the latter part of the second half saw a 30-point advantage by the Beavers.
Campbell was high scorer with 18 points. Eric Wiebers and Bissen had 15 each.
High scorer for the Spartans was Nick Thomas with 19.
The Beavers are now 10-2 for the season and 2-1 for the conference while Dubuque is 5-7 and 0-4 for the conference.
