Wind and waves caused boating deaths

Monday, January 17, 2005

The sinking of a barge on West Lake Okoboji that killed two people last October was apparently caused by windy conditions and high waves, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources determined.

"This is a boat that rides pretty low in the water, and with the windy conditions they had that day, we believe the engine compartment probably filled with water faster than the bilge pumps were able to keep up," DNR spokesman Kevin Baskins said Thursday.

Baskins said that conclusion was reached after an examination of the barge revealed no physical damage.
