Former chief sentenced on bribe charge

Monday, January 17, 2005

The former police chief of a northwest Iowa town has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for accepting a bribe.

Warren Palmer, 38, was sentenced Monday in Plymouth County District Court on a charge related to an Aug. 31, 2003 traffic stop in which a woman claimed she was sexually abused.

Palmer was arrested after a then 19-year-old Arkansas woman said Palmer used his position of police chief of Merrill to coerce her into a sex act after he stopped her car on U.S. Highway 75 in Merrill.

He pleaded guilty in September to a charge of bribery. Charges of extortion and sexual abuse were dismissed.

During apologized, but said he thought the sentence was excessive.
