WAVERLY - Jacob Olsen finished with 19 points and Michael Pipho added 18 to help send Wartburg to a 78-67 win over Buena Vista in a showdown for first place in the Iowa Conference on Saturday night at Waverly.
The win gives Wartburg a two-game lead over second place Coe and Buena Vista. The Knights are 14-1 in the league, while Coe is 12-3 and Buena Vista 13-4.
Wartburg and Coe had five league games remaining while the Beavers have just three.
Buena Vista held Wartburg to 38 percent shooting in the first half to take a 32-28 lead at the break. The Knights, however, caught fire by shooting 64 percent in the second half and outscoring the Beavers 50-35. Buena Vista shot 41 percent in the second half.
For the game, Wartburg was 27 of 54 for 50 percent. Buena Vista was 20 of 50 for 40 percent, including 3 of 14 from 3point range.
Chris Petersen led Buena Vista with 18 points and seven rebounds. Adam Jones added 15 points and Brett Smith 12 points, four assists and two steals.
Nolan Stribe, Scott Swalley and Robby Beyer all had four rebounds apiece.
Buena Vista lost the game despite outrebounding Wartburg 33-26 and holding the advantage at the free-throw line. The Beavers made 24 of 31 to the Knights' 17 of 24.
