SLPF taking applications for Citizens Academy

The Storm Lake Police Department is still accepting applications for the 2005 Citizens Academy.

The free class is limited to 18 participants and is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, February 22 and conclude on May 17. The course runs for 13 weeks and is held on Tuesday nights from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. at the Storm Lake Police Station.

Anyone interested in attending the Citizens Academy is asked to pick up and return an application at the Storm Lake Police Station located at 401 East Milwaukee Avenue. The curriculum for 2005 is as follows:

February 22 - Introduction, Community Policing Tools, Police Facility Tour

March 1 - Patrol Division, Traffic Enforcement/OWI

March 8 - K9 Program, Recruitment & Training, Community Service Officers

March 15 - Criminal Investigation Division, Technology Advances

March 22 - Spring Break

March 29 - Entry Team, Search & Seizure

April 5 - Crime Prevention, Tour BV County Jail, Tour BV County Communications Center

April 12 - Meth Lab Team, Illegal Drugs

April 19 - Gangs, Evidence

April 26 - Use of Force, Arrest Procedures, Firearms

May 3 - DARE/Officer Friendly, School Resource Officer, Fire Department Briefing, Tour Fire Station

May 10 - Tour City Hall, Tour Water Plant, Tour Waste Water Plant, Tour Street Department

May 17 - Evaluation, Culmination
