Donald L. Wiersma

December 21, 1921 - December 9, 2004

Funeral Service for Donald Wiersma was Friday, December 17 at 11 a.m. at the Storm Lake First Baptist Church, with Reverend Tom Hinshaw and Reverend Dr. Geran Dodson officiating. Burial was in the Storm Lake Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements.

Donald Leroy Wiersma, 82, of Mission, Kan., and formerly of Storm Lake passed away Thursday, December 9 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Overland Park, Kan.

Don was born December 21, 1921 in Hospers, to Gerrit and Jennie Wiersma and was reared in Sheldon. After serving as a Sergeant in the Army with the 133rd Infantry in WW II, he married Elva Davis Dodson on August 10, 1946 in Jackson, Minn. Throughout their married lives, Don and Elva operated businesses together, including a café in Laurens, Iowa and a dry cleaning service in Anita and later Don worked for Thermogas, Farm Service and Skelgas in Storm Lake. He also was a member of VFW Post 15016.

He served on the Anita School Board. Don and Elva were members of the Serpaci Car Club and Don served as president in 1979. In addition, he was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake. Don enjoyed many years living on the lake with his wife and children.

Don was preceded in death by his parents Gerrit and Jennie Wiersma, sister Iva Calsbeek, and his wife Elva.

He is survived by two brothers, Orville and wife Beverly Wiersma of Spencer and Jim Wiersma of El Cajon, Calif.; daughters Janet Wiersma of Mission, Kan.; Janice and husband Jim Ungerman of Bloomington, Minn.; Darlys and husband Don Plaisance of Storm Lake; Glenda and husband Randy Gerard of Lenexa Kan.; step-son Geran and wife Brenda Dodson of Loganville, Ga.; grandchildren Michelle and husband Chris Bowers; John and wife Lara Plaisance; Timothy Ungerman and Thomas Ungerman; step-grandchildren Christopher and wife Kim Dodson; Patrick and wife Jennifer Dodson; Dawn and husband Leonard Diprima; great-grandchildren Dalton and Abby Bowers; Hope, Evan and Abigrace Diprima; Caroline, Caitlin and Kaelie Dodson.

Perry Jo Hughes Mason

September 18, 1938 - December 14, 2004

Peggy Jo Hughes Mason, 66, of The Villages, Fla., formerly of Ellsworth, Pa. died Tuesday, December 14 at 8 p.m. in Shands Hospital, Gainesville, Fla.

She was born September 18, 1938 in Lake City, the daughter of Roy Olen Farmer and Grace Margaret Schwitters Farmer.

Peggy was a graduate of Storm Lake High School in Iowa. She was an avid golfer and active in Chipewa Golf Club activities in Bentleyville, PA for many years.

She married Roger Hughes in 1956. They operated Hughes Maintenance & Installation, a telecommunications company, from 1966 to 1992 until his death, June 26, 1992. She was vice president of the company.

She resided in Ellsworth from 1964 to 1998 then lived in Sunset Beach, N.C., from 1998 to 2003 and then moved to The Villages, Fla., in 2003.

Surviving his her husband Robert George Mason who she married in 1994. Also surviving are daughter, Paula Anne Martin and her husband Pete of of Eighty Four, Pa.; two sons, Daniel James Hughes and his wife Terri of Scenery Hill, Pa., and Cory Christopher Hughes of Las Vegas, N.V., one stepdaughter, Sheri Lynn Smith and husband Keith of Elwood City, PA; and one stepson, Robert John Mason and his wife Dana of Jefferson Boro.

She has six grandchildren, Melissa Anne Martin, Jessica Jo Martin and Christina Diane Martin of Eighty Four, Pa., Amber Rae Hughes, Joshua James Hughes and Britney Lee Crocket of Scenery Hill, Pa.; three step grandchildren, Brendan Robert Mason Smith of Elwood City, Pa.; one brother Dale Green Farmer of Dover, Alaska, and 11 nieces and nephews.

Lorna Jahde

July 24, 1939 - December 18, 2004

Funeral services for Lorna Lee Jahde, 66, Alta, will be held Saturday, December 18 at 10 a.m. at Faith Bible Christian Outreach Center with Pastor Loren Carlson officiating. Burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Alta.

Lorna passed away on December 14 following a lengthy illness at the Good Samaritan Center in Holstein.

Lorna Lee Jahde was born Sunday, July 24, 1939 in Caruthersville, Mo., to Reginald and Ida (Murphy) Hitchcock. She moved to Alta with her family when she was three years old and graduated from Alta High School in 1956.

After receiving her nursing education, Lorna worked at various nursing homes. Later in life, she received her Registered Nursing Degree and continued to work at area nursing homes and hospitals.

Lorna was united in marriage to Allen Jahde on August 28, 1970 in Aurelia. Lorna enjoyed shopping, having coffee with her girlfriends, and spending time with her grandchildren, especially by the pool.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Ida Johnson.

Lorna is survived by her husband, Allen of Alta; two sons, Thomas Schmitt and his special friend Barbara Brummond of New Hampton, and Craig Schmitt and his wife Shelley of Windsor, Calif.; one daughter, Sally Johnson and her husband Bryan of Omaha, Neb.; seven grandchildren, Andria, Jessica, Amanda, and Patrick Johnson and Zachary, Eli, and Elizabeth Schmitt; one brother, Bill Hitchcock and his wife Christina of Berryville, Alaska; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
