Grandpa's Place is closing its doors, ending unique youth site

Thursday, February 1, 2001

After less than a year in business, Dr. Bill Pewsey's Grandpa's Place is closing in downtown Storm Lake.

Pewsey had the dream of having a building aimed at Storm Lake's youth, though like many businesses he said business could not keep up with the overhead.

"The kids working liked it, but we just didn't draw enough people in consistently," Pewsey said.

Pewsey decided to open Grandpa's Place in response to a student survey done in December of 1999. The goal was to give middle school and high school students throughout Storm Lake and Buena Vista County a place to go

"Primarily the goal was to have a youth center where students have a place to hang out," Pewsey said. "That would give them other options for recreation and socialization."

He said there was a lot of enthusiasm from students who helped fix up the downtown building in preparation for its opening.
