The menus are planned, the dates are set and the students of Dorothy Redding's Creative Foods class at Storm Lake High School are anxiously awaiting the first of 11 scheduled meals they will be preparing for the public over the next three months.
Appropriately named Kreative Kitchen, this is the sixth year since students of Redding's have undertaken the responsibility of planning, shopping, preparing and serving a variety of meals.
With the completion of the first semester, a new set of students have been selected by Redding to begin the second semester. Those students include Eric Boulommavong, Maria Bravo, April Dettman, Peggy Fitchett, Rachel Gouldin, Chris Huerta, Jimmy Khounlo, Astar Naphalay, Tony Phommasene, Renae Schwaller, Sandy Souvandy, Phim Srimeuang and Sonja Watts.
Thus far, the class has undertaken the responsibility of planning the menus. "It is important for them to compile a balanced meal from the food pyramid," said Redding. "Once the main entree is determined, they work on side dishes, salads and desserts. They need to have a certain variety, texture, color and method of preparation."
