Alta students benefit from the academic help of BVU students

Thursday, February 1, 2001

Several Buena Vista University students have been volunteering their time at the Alta Connections Center, helping tutor students who require extra academic assistance.

The Alta Connection Center is located in the West View Mobile Home Park and provides after-school and summer programs for Alta's children. Community volunteers, the high school golf team and Spanish classes have all given of their time in the past.

The college students have been volunteering their time at the center twice a week and have also spent time going to the schools and tutoring some of the kids.

"The college students have really taken on the project and have been fantastic," Alta Action Team member Ginni Cook said. "They've gone beyond tutoring the kids. They have taken many of them to wrestling meets, basketball games and even sledding. They have really made a relationship with many of the kids."

Jackie Lonning and Laura Bernard are two volunteers from the university who have spearheaded the project and recruited many other student volunteers along the way. The student volunteers are involved in two different teacher education organizations at the university who decided this project would be very beneficial to them and the students.
