Tuesday, January 30, 2001

SAC CITY - Peggy Ploeger made two free throws with 8 seconds remaining to put Storm Lake St. Mary's ahead by four points and the Panthers hung on for a 41-40 victory over Sac City in Northwest Conference action Saturday night at Sac City.

Sac City held an 11-8 lead after the first quarter, 19-13 at halftime and it was tied 24-24 at the end of the third period.

Kassie Drey made a pair of free throws down the stretch in the fourth quarter to help the Panthers.

Jill Kestel and Steph Raulie scored 10 points apiece, while Drey added eight. Megan Kestel cleared 14 rebounds and Jill Kestel grabbed 13.

Jill Kestel handed out three assists, as did Drey. Drey and Beth Hansen each charted two steals.

St. Mary's was 14 of 30 from the field for 48 percent. Sac City was 14 of 44 for 32 percent.

"When we switched to a man-to-man defense we were able to keep them from scoring as much as they had been earlier and offensively we were more patient and got better shots," St. Mary's coach Ryan Berg said.

St. Mary's, now 2-11 in the league and 4-13 overall, hosts Sioux Central tonight.
