Newest addition complete for BVRMC

Patients at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center can now make a splash, if they so choose, in the medical center's new hydro-therapy pool, one of many amenities of the new physical and occupational therapy section at BVRMC.

The center was dedicated Sunday, as part of the newest addition in an era of growth and development at the facility, much to the delight of patients and staff. After more than a year in construction, the center is geared to helping patients recuperate faster through prescribed regimens of treatment ranging from cardiovascular workout machines to a pool with treadmill to a model kitchen/laundry area designed to assure patients that they are indeed ready to move to a higher endurance level at work or at home.

Marlon Gasner is director of the unit. Gasner, formerly with the Peak Performance Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Clinic in Wisconsin, acted as an outpatient sports and orthopedic medicine consultant for a group of private practice physicians in the Fox Valley/Lake Winnebago area. Gasner comes to Storm Lake with a master's in physical therapy from the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse. He is currently working on the doctorate in physical therapy from Simmons College in Boston.

While the center itself was designed before Gasner came on board a year ago, he did have a significant hand in selecting the pool and the equipment at the new center. Gasner sees "a good amount of expanded space" in the physical and occupational therapy area to accommodate patients.

The hydrotherapy pool make by Hydroworks features a treadmill that can be adjusted anywhere from a basic speed to a level for a highly conditioned athlete.

The BVRMC addition includes a hall linking the clinic to the hospital, with an art gallery included.

This follows the addition of the Center for Women, major makeovers for the emergency room, lab, business offices and lobby, new gift and coffee shops and many improvements to patient services.
