Aurelia's Curtis Parker reached a lofty goal here at the Class 1A state cross country meet while the Alta boys harriers finished a standout season with a fine performance.
Parker, a senior, took fourth overall at the Kennedy Golf Course Saturday afternoon, finishing the five-kilometer race in 17 minutes, 4 seconds.
"Curtis ran a great race," said Aurelia coach Jolene Hultgren. "He showed a great kick at the end to hold off several runners on a windy, cold day.
"One of Curtis' goals this year was to finish in the top five at state - it was an awesome run. I'm so proud of his accomplishments; he's had a great senior year."
Tim McKenna of NUH Cedar Falls won the Class 1A boys race in 16:50. He was followed by Nate Petesch of Marquette Bellevue in 16:58, Alex Eischeid of Marquette Bellevue in 16:59 and Parker. Taking fifth was Jesse Cunningham of Stewart in 17:05.
In the team competition, Wapsie Valley won the Class 1A boys race with 180 points, Central Elkader was second with 182 points and Marquette Bellevue third with 200 points.
The Alta boys took 12th with 366 points. LeMars Gehlen was ninth with 209 points while South O'Brien was 14th with 403.
Individually for the Cyclones, Tyler Sliefert led the way with a 52nd place finish in 18:16. Derek Lietz wasn't far behind, finishing 60th in 18:19 while Jordan Letzring was 73rd in 18:33.
Also, Thomas Hansen was 83rd in 18:50, Paul Allerdings 98th in 19:17, Kyle Sauter 99th in 19:18 and Tom Hinkeldey 107th in 19:29.
