Newell-Fonda kicker Peter Olsen put up two field goals to help the Mustangs beat Armstrong-Ringsted 6-0 at home Friday night.
Olsen's two 30-yard field goals both came in the second quarter, with 8:08 and 2:56 remaining. Despite 220 yards rushing, the Mustangs were unable to give themselves the field position to run the ball into the end zone.
Wilken was pleased, though, with Olsen's continued excellence as a kicker.
"He's had a nice year kicking the football. There's no question about that," Wilken said.
With Jared Neppl out the last three weeks after suffering a second concussion two weeks ago in the game against Rockwell City-Lytton, the Mustangs were not able to mount the offense that they could have otherwise.
"We had some breakdowns offensively that put us in some tough positions," Wilken said. "We just couldn't seem to get the ball across the goal line."
The Mustangs had 220 yards rushing on 38 carries while Armstrong-Ringsted had 153 yards in 36 carries.
Key rushers for Newell-Fonda were David Hopper with 125 yards on 23 carries. Brent Sexton had 67 yards on 11 carries.
Chad Buchholz had 24 yards on two carries and Tim Seagren had four yards on two carries.
For Armstrong-Ringsted, Ryan Bjorklund had 76 yards on 14 carries. Jake Peterson had 15 carries for 65 yards. Devin Looft had 16 yards on six carries and Kyle Matheson had a carry for a loss of four yards.
The Mustangs finished the season 6-3.
"It's coming to an end way too soon, especially for some of our seniors who have put their heart and soul into the football program," Wilken said. "This group had had to fight adversity just about every week."
