Mormons break ground for long-sought SL church

Monday, November 1, 2004

The Storm Lake Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will break ground Saturday for the new church that congregation members have dreamed of for more than 20 years in Storm Lake.

The building will be located at 712 Highway 110, in the West Lakes Estates residential area directly across from the Emerald Park city tennis courts. Cost is estimated at $885,000.

While the church is new, the Mormon presence in the community is not. "The Branch was originally organized in 1982, and steady growth has seen it grow to over 200 members, who come to Storm Lake from as far as Albert City, Cherokee and Laurens," said Maurica Proper, an Albert City woman who serves as Public Affairs Specialist for the Sioux City Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

It has been the growth and steady commitment that convinced church headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, to recently approve the construction of the Branch's new building.

The Church has no debt, and all buildings are paid for in cash. The Storm Lake Branch and its genealogy database is now located in a temporary facility located at 1411 E. Lakeshore Drive.
