Addressing the real risks of online shopping

Thursday, January 25, 2001

Online retail is predicted to jump $26 billion by 2002, up from 1.8 billion spent in 1997, said Rhonda K. Christensen, BV County Extension education director.

"With so much purchasing of goods and services online, the security of personal information can be easily questioned," said Christensen.

ISU Extension is educating consumers about the security and safety of online shopping.

Shopping online can be just as easy as shopping at the local department store if some simple precautions are followed, said Christensen. Some tips include shopping with companies you know, paying with a credit or charge card and keeping a record of the purchases made online.

"A set of guidelines for safe and economical online shopping is outlined in the ISU Extension publications PM 1724, Who's Got Your Number and PM 1789g, Online Shopping and Security," Christensen said. Both can be accessed at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/Pages/p....

More information about the safety of personal information while shopping online can be accessed at http://www.ftc.gov/privacy/index.html or by contacting your local county Extension office.
