STORM LAKE - By splitting a pair of Lakes Conference duals, Storm Lake finished tied for third place in the league on Wednesday night at Tornado Fieldhouse.
Storm Lake suffered a 34-26 setback to Estherville Lincoln Central, but pinned Sheldon 60-18 to finish 5-3 in the conference.
"We are happy with our conference finish and I think the kids know we were only two, maybe three matches from being 7-1 and in second alone instead of sharing third," Storm Lake coach Ty Seaman said.
Storm Lake started out in a 16-0 hole in the dual against Estherville before Dylan Wagener won by major decision 9-0 at 125 pounds.
Matt Gervais and Austin Brown won by decisions at 140 and 145, respectively, to close the gap to 28-10. Jared Ponsor then won 3-1 at 152 pounds and Al Keller prevailed by major decision at 160 to make it a 28-17 match.
Moments later, Ben Strandberg won by pin in 1 minute, 59 seconds at 189 and Matt Nitchals won by decision 6-1 at 215 to cut it to 31-26, but Estherville won the 275 pound match by decision to win the dual.
"We were very disappointed with the loss to Estherville, but at the same time, very, very pleased by the way we wrestled," Seaman said. "It was a tough loss.
