LITTLE DAMAGE IN TURKEY FARM FIRE

Monday, January 22, 2001

Storm Lake firefighters swarm over an arriving fire truck to run hoses into a burning farm building, while two other trucks haul in water from a hydrant a mile away at Storm Lake's north edge.

The Storm Lake Fire Department and Truesdale Fire Department were called to the Vilas Turkey Farm at 923 590th Street shortly after 3:30 p.m. Thursday when a fire broke out in a turkey shed. Firefighters observed heavy smoke coming out of the east end of the building created by burning wood shavings used for bedding and flooring in the center of the long metal stock building. The fire was extinguished before any structural damage could occur, but firefighters remained on the scene in the cold conditions until 5 p.m. while debris was removed. No one was injured and there were no birds located in the building at the time. Firefighters were assisted by the Buena Vista County Sheriff's Department.
