The City of Storm Lake is aiming at mid to late April to select a fire chief for the Storm Lake Fire Department. The civil service commission approved the process for selecting a new fire chief in a meeting yesterday.
The hiring process began last year but was suspended after former city administrator Alan Winders resigned. The city decided to wait until a city administrator was selected to begin the selection process again. Department veteran Mike Jones has been acting as fire chief for the past year after longtime chief Ron Wilson retired.
The city will advertise the position, but will also notify everyone who previously applied. Approximately 76 candidates applied and then were informed the process would suspended.
Public Safety Director Mark Prosser said they hope to complete the application process by Feb. 9 and have a recommendation by mid to late April. City administrationis to interview candidates and narrow down the list to return to the civil service commission. The city administrator ultimately appoints the fire chief.
