Monday, January 22, 2001

Rare Storm Lake bird beat to death with baseball bat, civil penalties high.

Three 20-year-old Storm Lake men have been charged with beating a rare trumpeter swan to death in Storm Lake December 17.

The swan was hatched and raised as part of the Buena Vista County Swan Restoration Project, and had been released to the wild on the lake last April.

Evan Grieme, Josh Pyle and Lance Ploeger, all listed with Buena Vista University addresses, allegedly found the bird on a road southwest of Storm Lake and beat it to death with a baseball bat. No further details of the incident are being released.

Each faces fines and surcharges of $145 and automatic civil penalties of $1,500 if found guilty of killing the protected species, according to the citations issued Monday. The case was investigated by Department of Natural Resources officer Chris Lloyd with assistance from the Storm Lake Police Department.
